Sub 2 Buddies
Sub 2 Half Marathon is an aspiration mark for all the runners, who have ever dreamt of running 21098m at a go. I don’t know what is the reason, but anyone who ever dreams of running a Half Marathon, this becomes a second aspiration, first one still remains – completing one.
So this is the story three 40+ men, who dreamt of doing a sub 2 HM after coming agonizingly close to it. ( All Three had PB’s between 122 to 125 minutes). Few things that were common besides that they haven’t achieved Sub 2 were, they were part of the same running community (Boot Camp Yellow, had support from families and were regular in their training. So they were training together nurturing this dream but they were not “together”. The journey started sometime in late September and early October 2017, on a Sunday morning (very early morning), these three friends met at the designated place, where the group was supposed to meet for the Sunday run. They were 15 minutes early to the decided time. Let me tell you, this was not by design but a co-incidence (God has his ways). Next timed half marathon ( Starry Nights Half Marathon was still 2 weeks away at that time.) A spurt of the moment, someone uttered let us do a longer run today. How about an 18k today. No exchange of words, the simple nod of heads, and that was the beginning of the dream. That day, they ended up doing 19k and those 2 hours were full of jokes, chit chat, sharing experiences and a friendship was forged. For next two weeks, they were together for every run encouraging each other and pushing each other but the fun element was in equal proportions as was the focus. Finally, on the day of the run, all of them missed the sub 2 mark and were dejected but were more determined to achieve it. That’s when a whats app group was formed and it was called “Sub 2 Buddies”. The agreement was that we will go for sub 2 in ADHM and will leave nothing to chance. ADHM was little more than a month away and training regimen in the group was gaining momentum and intensity at training were at the level next. Everybody in the group was training hard so were these three. Besides the training, the splits of the day’s run were exchanged on a group and each run was discussed and analyzed (with whatever limited knowledge they had); forwards were kept pouring in and there were lots of jokes at each other expense. All Sunday runs were about discussing pace plan; nutrition and encouraging each other. All interval training was chance to push each other and somehow bring out best. All tempo runs were all about meeting the plan given by coach and to tone down any overexcitement and avoid injury. They even ran on the morning of Diwali to keep the focus and intensity.
By end of October, everything was finalised, race strategy, pacing plan and nutrition intervals and were approved by Coach. Few dummy runs were done to test the plan and everything looked good.
On the race day, they were together as soon as they entered the stadium and till the holding area. Warm up was done together and final instruction from 2-hour Bus in charge (who happened to be a good friend) was absorbed together. It was perfect weather for the run, and all three were running with the 2 hours bus merrily singing the bus anthem. At 14th Km mark first, one left the bus and surged ahead. 18th KM mark rest two left the bus and surged ahead as per the plan. All three ended the run few seconds apart and achieved the magical figure of a sub 2 HM. A quick huddle followed the run and silent thank you was said(not said) to each other. Amidst a lot of hugs; laughter, giggles, and congratulations, the journey of sub 2 culminated with ADHM X. All thanks to training and wonderful community that we called BCY, these three got together and achieved a dream. Well, the group is still alive on whats app, jokes are still shared so are forwards and splits, till they find another milestone to challenge, challenge together as buddies. For me personally, one the biggest reason that I dreamt of, tried for and achieved sub 2 was these two gentlemen, besides the running program of BCY.
